The management of Al-Azhar Grand Mosque in South Jakarta has carried out the slaughter of sacrificial animals for Eid al-Adha 1447 AH. The mosque managed a total of 14 cows and 43 goats, amounting to 57 sacrificial animals this year.

“We have a total of 14 cows and 43 goats, which is a 20 per cent increase from last year,” said Tatang Komara, Head of the Al-Azhar Grand Mosque Office, at the site on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.

Tatang detailed that nine of the 14 cows were slaughtered on the first day, including one belonging to the family of the 10th and 12th Indonesian Vice President, Jusuf Kalla (JK).

“Today, we slaughtered nine, with the heaviest weighing one tonne. One of the nine cows was entrusted by the extended family of Mr Jusuf Kalla, which is brown,” he explained.

In addition to the mosque’s internal operations, the Al-Azhar Campus (TK-SMA) also collected a large number of sacrificial animals — 27 cows and 144 goats — distributed to teachers, staff, and worshippers across various regions.

Tatang confirmed that the slaughter process followed strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in accordance with Islamic law. Al-Azhar collaborates with certified Halal Butcher (Juleha) teams.

“We do not use just any butcher. The butchers are certified as Juleha, who have the proper etiquette for slaughtering cows and other procedures to comply with Islamic law,” he said.

Regarding distribution, Tatang stated that Al-Azhar Mosque this year has eliminated coupon distribution at the site to avoid crowds and potential unrest. The committee has implemented a Delivery Order (DO) system, delivering the meat directly to recipients.

“We strictly avoid mass gatherings as there have been minor disturbances in the past. Therefore, we now deliver to government institutions, Islamic boarding schools, orphanages, and individuals,” he concluded.
