Ajaib secures US$270 million investment from SBI Holdings
Ajaib, a technology company providing an investment application, has secured an investment worth US$270 million, equivalent to Rp4.8 trillion, from SBI Holdings, a Japanese financial giant listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange that houses Japan’s largest securities firm.
With this latest funding, the total capital raised by Ajaib since its founding has surpassed US$500 million, or Rp8.9 trillion. The company said the investment funds will be allocated across Ajaib’s various business lines in Southeast Asia.
“Our hope is that the largest portion of this investment continues to be invested in Indonesia,” said Ajaib Co-Founder and CEO Anderson Sumarli in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.
Sumarli said the US$270 million investment is also a form of global confidence in Ajaib’s growing customer base.
Since its launch in 2019, the company said millions of people in Indonesia have invested through Ajaib, ranging from Indonesian stocks and crypto assets to United States equities. The majority of Ajaib’s customers are first-time investors, and most come from second- and third-tier cities in Indonesia.
“Today, millions of Indonesians save and invest through Ajaib — mostly first-time investors, many from small towns,” said Sumarli.
The company said the investment will also expand Ajaib’s hiring in Indonesia. Ajaib believes the quality of domestic talent is on par with the best in the world and that Indonesia has all the prerequisites to become Southeast Asia’s technology hub.
The company also hopes that this significant vote of confidence will pave the way for more global capital to enter Indonesia’s technology sector, including artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres, as well as create quality jobs for the nation’s people.
The company also expressed appreciation to the Government of Indonesia, the Ministry of Finance, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Bank Indonesia, and the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti) for the progressive regulatory framework and strategic initiatives that have opened the door wide for foreign investment and the development of new technologies.
According to the company, global investor confidence has grown from legal certainty, sound supervision, and openness to innovation. In this regard, the company believes Indonesia has demonstrated leadership.
“As long as the government and regulators continue to open space for innovation as they have done so far, this is where our commitment will continue to grow. We are committed to continuing to build together with Indonesia,” said Sumarli.
