Airlines allowed to impose surcharge

TAIPEI: Taiwan's China Airlines and EVA Airways along with five foreign airlines have been granted permission to impose fuel surcharges to offset the impact of soaring oil prices, officials said Monday.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said the charges, ranging from US$3.9 to $7.5 for short-haul flights, and $13 to $15 for long-haul flights, would become effective Wednesday.

"The decision was made to help airline companies cope with increasing operation costs stemming from higher oil prices," a CAA official told AFP.

The fuel levy will last for three months, he said.

The five international operators are Cathay Pacific Airways, Dragonair, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways. -- AFP
