Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has urged micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to increase their production capacity while strengthening their ability to maintain and expand markets.

He pointed to the experience of Indian MSMEs, which he believes can serve as a reference for local business actors seeking to learn business strengthening strategies.

“India is one of the countries that has successfully promoted MSMEs—not only do they produce, but they also know how to protect their markets,” Airlangga said at the UMKM Finance Summit 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to Airlangga, MSMEs in India have been able to grow and develop alongside large-scale businesses. He assessed that this condition forms one of the foundations of the country’s economy.

He proposed that the total MSME financing target be increased to Rp2,000 trillion, from the current level of around Rp1,500 trillion.

The increase is expected to expand access to financing, particularly for business actors who remain in the middle or have not yet obtained adequate financing access.

The move is also considered important to fill the financing gap for MSMEs that have the potential to grow and move up a class.
