Airlangga to Danantara Boss: Gold Investment Could Deliver 60% Returns a Year
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto touched on the potential gains from gold investment, which he said could reach 60% in a year. The remarks were made while discussing the development of the bullion bank business in Indonesia in the presence of the Chief Investment Officer of Danantara, Pandu Sjahrir, at the launch of Indonesia’s Bullion Ecosystem in Jakarta, on Friday, 6 March 2026.
‘If investment in gold yields 60% in a year, then where else would you invest, Mr Pandu? This is proven by BSI and Pegadaian,’ Airlangga said.
Airlangga also highlighted Pegadaian’s performance, noting a return on assets (ROA) of 6.7%. In addition, the number of Pegadaian’s gold customers rose to around 5.7 million, with gold savings reaching 19.25 tonnes. He added that total gold managed by Pegadaian is around 141.7 tonnes, a figure even larger than Bank Indonesia’s holdings. ‘So Pegadaian’s gold management is higher than Bank Indonesia (BI). So please pursue the acquisition, Madam Destry,’ Airlangga said.
Currently in Indonesia there are two bullion bank operators: PT Pegadaian and PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BRIS).
Pegadaian’s President Director Damar Latri Setiawan said Pegadaian reported assets in 2025 of Rp152 trillion with outstanding financing around Rp126 trillion, or up 40%. Net profit stood at Rp8.35 trillion, or up more than 42% from the previous year. ‘So the ROA that the President requires for the company is at least 7; we are close to this, we are at 6-7%. For ROA, ROI is also attractive, 21%,’ Damar said in the same event.
Meanwhile, PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI) President Director Anggoro Eko Cahyo reported gold customer growth of around 40% for the previous year. BSI’s gold trading volume reached around 4 tonnes in 2025. ‘In the last two months, the Minister has traded 2.7 tonnes. So it looks like this year trading could double,’ Anggoro said.
