Airlangga Reveals Method to Restrict Pertalite, Vehicle Type to Be Deciding Factor
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the government will take an approach based on the type of vehicle used. According to Airlangga, the type of vehicle will reflect the decile of its owner.
“We previously based it on the type of vehicle. From the type of vehicle, it reflects the decile,” Airlangga said at his office in Central Jakarta on Friday (21/8/2026).
Regarding the scheme, Airlangga said the government is still discussing it. Unfortunately, Airlangga did not disclose which types of vehicles will be restricted. He only confirmed that there will be a more complete explanation regarding the restriction rules.
“We will finalise it later, we will finalise it,” Airlangga said.
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa had previously revealed the government’s plan to tighten the distribution of subsidised fuel, particularly Pertalite. The government plans to restrict Pertalite purchases for upper economic groups, with decile 10 as the initial target.
Purbaya said the policy will not be immediately applied to all decile 9-10 groups. The government will implement restrictions gradually and will first target people in decile 10.
According to him, the policy is targeted to begin within the next few months. Previously, Purbaya had mentioned that Pertalite restrictions would be implemented before the turn of the year.
“It is not being tightened. It will just be ensured, as far as I know, so that it is well targeted. Perhaps we will try in the next few months, decile 10, we will restrict first,” Purbaya said when met at the DPR RI Building in Jakarta on Thursday (20/8/2026).
Purbaya said the restriction is expected to make fuel subsidy distribution better targeted. In addition, this policy has the potential to save government budget that has been allocated for fuel subsidies.
