JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto paid tribute to the late Try Sutrisno, Indonesia’s sixth vice president, describing him as a vice president who served during a critical period in the nation’s history.

“Innalillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rojiun. We extend our condolences on the passing of our national figure, Mr Try Sutrisno. He served as Vice President during a critical period in Indonesia, specifically from 1993-1998,” Airlangga said whilst paying respects at Sutrisno’s residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday (2 March 2026).

Airlangga acknowledged that Try Sutrisno paid considerable attention to national issues during his tenure as vice president, particularly regarding national development and the dual function of the Indonesian Armed Forces (ABRI) at that time.

“After leaving office, he remained active as a national figure, particularly with his concern for national unity and matters relating to the constitution,” he stated.

“In essence, we have lost a national figure who was also very composed in handling various national challenges,” Airlangga concluded.

Try Sutrisno, Indonesia’s sixth vice president, passed away at the Armed Forces Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto in Jakarta on Monday (2 March 2026). The death was confirmed by retired Lieutenant General Albertus Budi Sulistya, former head of RSPAD. According to reports, Sutrisno died at 06.58 a.m. (WIB) on that day. His body was scheduled to be blessed at Sunda Kelapa Mosque and buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery later that day.
