Airlangga Proposes Rp2,000 Trillion Target for MSME Lending, Here's Why
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has proposed that the credit distribution target for the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) sector be increased to Rp2,000 trillion from the current position of around Rp1,500 trillion. “This is additional homework for Mr (MSME Minister) Maman, if possible this should increase to Rp2,000 trillion,” Airlangga said at the UMKM Finance Summit 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. As of June 2026, MSME credit was recorded at Rp1,519.1 trillion, growing by 1.05 per cent year-on-year (yoy), an improvement compared to 0.60 per cent yoy in May 2026. Meanwhile, based on the results of the 2026 National Survey of Financial Literacy and Inclusion (SNLIK) released by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Indonesia’s financial inclusion index increased from 92.74 per cent in 2025 to 93.61 per cent in 2026. The national financial literacy index also rose to 69.57 per cent. “So they are already literate, already inclusive, they have accounts. But their ability to read, to invest and so on, that is what we are pursuing next,” Airlangga said. According to Airlangga, the increase in the credit target is expected to expand financing access, particularly for business actors who have so far remained in the middle or have not yet obtained adequate financing access. This step is considered important to fill the financing gap for MSME players who have the potential to develop and move up in class. During a press conference after the event, MSME Minister Maman Abdurrahman stated that he would prepare various scenarios to realise the target proposed by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. “Earlier there was also a little push from the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. We will prepare several scenarios later,” Maman said. Meanwhile, Chairperson of the OJK Board of Commissioners Friderica Widyasari Dewi stated that her agency places strengthening the MSME ecosystem and financing as a main programme. “We have a lot of support for MSMEs and we direct the entire industry to support MSMEs in Indonesia. This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s message which strongly supports the financial services sector having a bias and support for MSMEs in Indonesia,” she said.
