Airlangga Opens Option for Danantara to Manage Financial SEZ in Bali

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto has spoken out regarding the establishment of a special economic zone (SEZ) in the financial sector in Bali, Indonesia. This plan was previously mentioned by Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.

Airlangga acknowledged the existence of the plan and sees an opportunity for developing a financial centre in Bali.

“Yes, of course, we see an opportunity for a financial centre. We are also preparing for it. With the changes in geopolitics, Bali becomes attractive,” Airlangga stated when met at his office, quoted on Tuesday (28/4/2026).

Regarding the plan, Airlangga said the government is currently preparing the regulations. He revealed that the government is also studying what regulations can accommodate the establishment of a financial centre.

“And also how far those regulations can accommodate what is requested for the establishment of a financial centre or family office. A financial centre is entirely managed by, in quotes, non-government,” he explained.

Furthermore, Airlangga opened the option for the financial centre to be managed by BPI Danantara. “But if Danantara manages it, that would be fine too,” he stated.

Finance Minister Purbaya previously conveyed that there is already a reference for building a financial services sector SEZ that is most suitable for Indonesia, namely the one already established in Dubai, the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). He hopes the financial services sector SEZ project can be built quickly.

“The model that fits for me is the Dubai one, like that. We will pursue it in the near future,” Purbaya said.

According to Purbaya, President Prabowo Subianto has agreed to build the Financial Services SEZ. He said the project development will be led by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto.

“The President has given instructions and guidance. So, Mr Coordinating Minister for the Economy will lead his team, and we will assist from there,” he explained.
