Airlangga: Clean electricity exports to Singapore cannot start this year

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has stated that the policy of exporting clean electricity to Singapore cannot begin this year. He assessed that the construction of transmission infrastructure to support electricity exports to Singapore would take approximately 1 to 1.5 years. “It cannot be implemented this year. Building electricity transmission facilities requires at least 1 to 1.5 years to implement,” Airlangga said during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. Regarding the development of the policy, Airlangga stated that the government is currently conducting a technical evaluation together with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia. Previously, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia signed a memorandum of understanding regarding clean electricity exports to Singapore with a capacity reaching 3.4 gigawatts by 2035. The clean electricity export agreement was reached after a lengthy negotiation process. Bahlil had previously expressed objections several times if Indonesia only exported clean electricity without receiving reciprocal benefits from Singapore. “I said that cooperative relations must be carried out on a mutually beneficial principle. We send electricity to Singapore, and as a result of the negotiations, Singapore and Indonesia will jointly build an industrial area,” Bahlil stated on Friday (13/6/2025).
