Airlangga: BI's function to safeguard rupiah continues after Perry Warjiyo's resignation
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has confirmed that Bank Indonesia’s (BI) function as the institution safeguarding rupiah exchange rate stability and setting monetary policy continues to run as it should following Perry Warjiyo’s resignation as BI Governor.
“What matters is the institution. And the BI institution continues to carry out its function of safeguarding the exchange rate and maintaining monetary stability,” Airlangga told journalists at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office in Jakarta on Monday.
When asked further about the name of a candidate for BI Governor, Airlangga asked the public to await further developments. He affirmed that, as of now, he has not received any name of a candidate to succeed Perry Warjiyo as BI Governor.
Following Perry Warjiyo’s resignation, the post of BI Governor is temporarily held by BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti.
“We monitored it through the media this morning,” Airlangga said when asked whether he had known of Perry Warjiyo’s resignation beforehand.
Airlangga also assured that the coordinating ministry he leads continues to coordinate regularly with fiscal and monetary officials.
On Monday morning, Bank Indonesia announced Perry Warjiyo’s resignation from the post of BI Governor, which was tendered voluntarily for personal reasons. The resignation took place on Saturday (25 July).
Subsequently, BI, through a Board of Governors Meeting (RDG) on Sunday (26 July), appointed BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as Acting Governor of BI.
At a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, Destry stressed that the Indonesian central bank continues to prioritise good and professional institutional governance, and will continue to work in synergy and coordination with the government in carrying out its duties and mandate.
“Bank Indonesia always ensures the continuity of its tasks and authority to achieve rupiah stability, maintain the stability of the payment system, and help safeguard the stability of the financial system in support of sustainable economic growth, which can create a conducive economic environment for the growth of the real sector and job creation, in accordance with the mandate of the BI Law,” Destry said.
On the same occasion, Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi stated that President Prabowo Subianto had accepted the resignation of BI Governor Perry Warjiyo and would follow it up according to the mechanism regulated under the Bank Indonesia Law.
Prasetyo said Perry’s resignation letter was officially received by the government on Sunday (26 July).
According to Prasetyo, President Prabowo accepted the resignation while also conveying his appreciation for Perry’s seven years of service leading the central bank.
He also said the government would promptly follow up on the administrative process of honourably dismissing Perry through the issuance of a Presidential Decree (Keppres), as regulated under the prevailing laws and regulations.
