Airlangga Assures Bank Indonesia Functions Remain Normal After Perry Warjiyo's Resignation
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has assured that the functions of Bank Indonesia (BI) as an institution responsible for maintaining rupiah exchange rate stability and monetary policy will continue to operate as normal following the resignation of Governor Perry Warjiyo. “The important thing is the institution. Bank Indonesia continues to carry out its functions to maintain the exchange rate and monetary stability,” Airlangga stated in Jakarta on Monday (27/7/2026).
When asked about potential candidates for the new BI Governor, Airlangga urged the public to await further developments, noting that he had not yet received any information regarding a successor. He also confirmed that his ministry maintains regular coordination with both fiscal and monetary authorities.
Bank Indonesia earlier announced that Perry Warjiyo had voluntarily stepped down from his position, with his resignation letter submitted on Saturday (25/7/2026). Following an internal Board of Governors meeting, Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti was appointed as the interim Governor to ensure institutional continuity.
In a press conference, Destry Damayanti emphasised that the central bank remains committed to upholding good institutional governance and professionalism. “Bank Indonesia consistently ensures the continuity of its duties and authority to achieve rupiah stability, maintain payment system stability, and support financial system stability in order to foster sustainable economic growth and create a conducive economic environment for the real sector and job creation,” she said.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto has accepted the resignation and expressed his gratitude for Perry Warjiyo’s seven years of service. The government will proceed with the administrative process for an honourable discharge through a Presidential Decree in accordance with the provisions of the Bank Indonesia Law.
