The Indonesian government has welcomed the collaboration between PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) to produce electric vehicle batteries domestically. This partnership is seen as aligning with efforts to bolster the national automotive industry while promoting the transition to low-emission vehicles. “I extend my appreciation to TMMIN. I also appreciate the recent milestone of exporting three million units. This demonstrates that Toyota can meet global quality standards in over 100 countries,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta on Monday (20/4/2026). Currently, the national automotive industry ecosystem employs around 1.5 million workers, from manufacturing to the supply chain. Amid global economic pressures, the government is encouraging the industry to enhance competitiveness through strengthening industrial structures and domestic supply chains. Furthermore, the transformation towards electric vehicles is a primary focus, including the development of batteries based on local resources such as nickel. “With close collaboration between the government, businesses, and all stakeholders, we hope the Indonesian industry can continue to compete,” Airlangga stated. In line with this direction, the TMMIN and CATL partnership represents a concrete step in building the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. The project encompasses the production of batteries at the cell and module levels, which will support electrified vehicles, particularly hybrids. TMMIN President Director Nandi Julyanto added that the investment in this project amounts to Rp 1.3 trillion, focused on procuring battery production machines. “We are investing Rp 1.3 trillion for the machines used to produce cells and modules at CATL. The entire investment comes from us,” said Nandi. He explained that the machines will be placed at a partner facility and operated by CATL, combining Toyota’s investment strength with CATL’s global technology and operations. “The location and subsequent process will be like having a mould, then placing it with the supplier. So CATL will run it, with the investment from us. This is the first one, producing cells and modules, not just battery packs,” Nandi said.
