Airfares Set to Rise Again, AHY Emphasises Government Must Maintain Balance
Jakarta, VIVA – The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), has ensured that adjustments to the upper fare limit (TBA) for aircraft tickets are carried out in a measurable manner, considering the condition of the community and the rise in global energy prices resulting from the Middle East conflict.
AHY noted that global geopolitical pressures continue to affect various economic sectors, including transportation and the aviation industry in Indonesia. According to him, global conflicts and tensions have a direct impact on the rise in global energy prices, which subsequently affects the operational costs of the air transportation sector and national aviation services as a whole.
“It is indeed not always easy to face such global dynamics, but hopefully, there will be an improvement in the situation and, at the same time, (airfares) will not be too burdensome for the public,” said AHY in Jakarta, as reported on Monday, 18 May 2026.
He explained that the government understands public concerns regarding the potential increase in airfares ahead of the school holidays and the Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah celebrations, which typically increase national travel mobility. AHY stated that adjusting flight tariffs is a difficult step, as the Government must maintain a balance between the sustainability of the aviation industry and the economic capacity of the wider Indonesian population.
“Therefore, countries around the world, including Indonesia, must take difficult steps; there will be adjustments that will impact the public, but these are measures that must be taken,” he added.
According to him, the government continues to hold discussions with the Ministry of Transportation regarding various policy options to ensure that ticket price adjustments remain within reasonable and measurable limits.
He added that the government is also coordinating with airlines operating in Indonesia to find the best solutions to face operational cost pressures caused by the current rise in global energy prices.
AHY hopes that the global geopolitical situation, particularly the conflict in the Middle East region, can improve soon so that pressure on the global energy market and the aviation sector can gradually decrease. He noted that the government continues to monitor global developments while ensuring that national air transportation policies remain attentive to the interests of the public and the sustainability of the Indonesian aviation industry.
