Indonesia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah (Menhaj), Moch Irfan Yusuf, known as Gus Irfan, has assured that the government will not impose the increase in Hajj operational costs on pilgrims despite the surge in aircraft fuel prices.

He revealed that there had been concerns after two major airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Saudia Airlines, requested adjustments to flight prices due to rising fuel costs stemming from the US-Israel and Iran conflict.

“Alhamdulillah, we are very grateful after we were somewhat anxious for a few days due to the requests from Garuda and Saudia Airlines to increase or change prices because of the avtur price hike. But President Prabowo firmly stated that even if there is an increase, it should not be burdened on the pilgrims,” he said after opening the National Work Meeting (Rakernas) for Hajj Implementation Consolidation in Tangerang on Wednesday (8/4/2026) evening.

According to Gus Irfan, President Prabowo Subianto’s directive serves as a strong affirmation that the state is present to protect Hajj pilgrims from additional cost burdens.

The government, continued Gus Irfan, will not immediately accept the airlines’ proposed price increases. All cost components will be recalculated and communicated with various parties, including Commission VIII of the DPR RI.

“Of course, we will recalculate. The letters submitted by Garuda and Saudia yesterday were still above 100,” he said.

Regarding the funding sources to cover potential cost differences, Gus Irfan mentioned that the government is opening options for financing from the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) or funds managed by the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH).

“It could be from the APBN or other sources, for example BPKH. But clearly, the President stated that it should not be burdened on the pilgrims. That means the government will certainly find alternatives outside of the pilgrims,” explained Gus Irfan.

In the National Work Meeting for Consolidation, in his speech, Gus Irfan also emphasised that global dynamics do indeed impact Hajj operations, particularly the aviation sector. However, the government ensures that the policies taken remain pro-pilgrim.

Additionally, he conveyed that aspects of security and safety for pilgrims will remain the top priority. The geopolitical situation in the Middle East region, which is starting to ease, is also seen as providing optimism for the smooth conduct of the Hajj worship in 1447 H/2026 AD.

“Alhamdulillah, tensions in the Middle East are beginning to subside. This is an important factor in supporting the smooth Hajj pilgrimage,” said this grandson of the NU founder.
