Aircraft Fares and Fuel Prices Drive April 2026 Inflation to 0.13 Percent
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded inflation for April 2026 at 0.13 percent on a monthly basis (month-to-month/mtm), primarily driven by price increases in the transportation sector and petroleum fuel (BBM). This inflation rise is reflected in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which increased from 110.95 in March 2026 to 111.09 in April 2026. Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that the transportation group was the main contributor to monthly inflation with a 0.99 percent increase and a 0.12 percent contribution to April’s inflation. “In April 2026, inflation was 0.13 percent on a monthly or mtm basis, or there was an increase in the consumer price index from 110.95,” he said during the BPS release at the BPS Central Office on Monday (4/5/2026). In addition, several food commodities such as cooking oil at 0.05 percent, tomatoes at 0.03 percent, and rice and rice with side dishes each at 0.02 percent also contributed to inflation. On the other hand, several commodities still exerted deflationary pressure, including broiler chicken meat with a 0.11 percent deflation contribution, gold jewellery at 0.09 percent, cayenne pepper at 0.06 percent, and broiler eggs at 0.04 percent. Based on components, April’s inflation was mainly driven by the core component which experienced a 0.23 percent increase with a 0.15 percent contribution. Influencing commodities included cooking oil, rice with side dishes, mobile phones, fried chicken, laptops or notebooks, and granulated sugar. Meanwhile, the government-regulated price component also recorded inflation of 0.69 percent with a 0.13 percent contribution, triggered by increases in air transport fares, petrol, household fuel, and machine-rolled clove cigarettes. Conversely, the volatile price component experienced deflation of 0.88 percent with a 0.15 percent deflation contribution, driven by declines in broiler chicken meat, cayenne pepper, broiler eggs, and red chilli prices. On an annual basis (year-on-year/yoy), April 2026 inflation was recorded at 2.42 percent, with the CPI rising from 108.47 in April 2025 to 111.09 in April 2026. From the expenditure group perspective, annual inflation was mainly contributed by the food, beverages, and tobacco group which experienced 3.06 percent inflation with a 0.90 percent contribution, triggered by commodities such as fresh fish, broiler chicken meat, rice, cooking oil, machine-rolled clove cigarettes, and broiler eggs. In addition, the personal care and other services group recorded high inflation of 11.43 percent with a 0.77 percent contribution to annual inflation. By component, all groups recorded annual inflation, with the core component at 2.44 percent and 1.56 percent contribution, the volatile price component at 3.37 percent and 0.56 percent contribution, and the government-regulated price component at 1.53 percent and 0.30 percent contribution.
