Jakarta (ANTARA) - Low-cost carrier AirAsia X has announced an increase in its fuel surcharge by around 20 per cent, resulting in average fares rising between 30 and 40 per cent, due to the war between Iran and the United States-Israel, which has also affected global jet fuel prices. “Overall, we have added about 20 per cent to the fuel surcharge for jet fuel/avtur. In terms of fares, we tend to increase them by around 30 to 40 per cent compared to before,” said AirAsia X Chief Commercial Officer Amanda Woo during an online press conference monitored from Jakarta on Monday. Previously, global jet fuel prices were reported to have surged sharply in April 2026, breaking into the range of $150–200 per barrel due to the war between Iran and the United States-Israel. This price is significantly higher than the normal level below $100 per barrel. “Amid geopolitical pressures and supply chain disruptions, global jet fuel prices have more than doubled compared to 2025. To maintain operational sustainability, we are making measured tariff adjustments, including a one-time implementation of the fuel surcharge across our entire network,” said AirAsia X Group CEO Bo Lingam. Bo stated that the company is also continuing to optimise its network by redirecting capacity to stronger routes, as well as maximising Fly-Thru connectivity through Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Bangkok in Thailand to capture demand more efficiently. “On the other hand, we are actively negotiating with strategic partners to control costs. With the gradual reactivation of the fleet, unit costs will improve further, supplemented by the strengthening of ASEAN currencies as a natural hedge against USD-based costs,” he said.
