Jakarta - AirAsia X Berhad (AAX/AirAsia Group) is strengthening operational efficiency and profitability amid global market dynamics through the purchase of 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft valued at around $19 billion. “This aircraft enables us to build a wider network with higher flight frequencies, while supporting better operational efficiency,” said AirAsia Group CEO Bo Lingam in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday. The agreement also provides flexibility for AirAsia to increase orders to a total of 300 aircraft from the A220 family, in line with the group’s future growth needs. Bo stated that AirAsia is the world’s first airline to operate the latest Airbus A220 configuration with a capacity of 160 seats. The aircraft, Bo continued, provides greater flexibility for AirAsia in adjusting capacity to market demand, while allowing increased flight frequencies on existing routes. With higher frequencies, passengers can enjoy more daily departure options, better connectivity, and a more comfortable Fly-Thru travel experience. Additionally, the A220’s capacity allows AirAsia to achieve profitability with fewer passengers compared to larger narrow-body aircraft. “The A220 will be a key foundation in the next growth phase and support our vision of building the world’s first truly globally connected low-cost carrier network,” said Capital A CEO and AirAsia Group Advisor Tony Fernandes. With deliveries beginning in 2028, the fleet will operate to serve various destinations in the ASEAN and Asia-Pacific regions. The presence of the A220 will also provide greater fleet management flexibility, allowing A320 and A321 aircraft to be allocated to medium-haul routes in the Asia-Pacific region, while A330s are focused on long-haul flights to Europe, Australia, and North America.
