Air Quality in East Kotawaringin, Central Kalimantan, Reaches Hazardous Zone, Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant
Residents of East Kotawaringin Regency (Kotim), Central Kalimantan, have been urged to increase their vigilance regarding air quality. Air conditions in the area have deteriorated once again and have now entered the hazardous category.
Based on monitoring by the Ministry of Environment’s ISPUnet on Friday (28/8/2026) at 05.00 WIB, the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) in Kotim reached 313. Particulate matter (PM) was the primary parameter driving the high level of air pollution.
Head of the Kotim Environmental Agency, Marjuki, confirmed the situation. He urged the public not to underestimate the high pollution figures, especially as Kotim continues to face the threat of forest and land fires (karhutla).
“The hazardous category can have serious impacts on human health, as well as affecting animals and plants,” said Marjuki, as reported by detikKalimantan on Friday (28/8).
According to him, residents should reduce outdoor activities while air quality remains poor. More vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory disorders, require greater attention.
“For residents who must carry out activities outside the home, wearing a mask is one of the recommended protective measures. Strenuous physical activity outdoors should also be reduced to minimise exposure to polluted air,” he said.
