For 24 years, PT Biru Semesta Abadi, known for its brand Air Minum Biru, has continued to develop its refillable drinking water services by prioritising quality, ease of access, and sustainability. Currently, Biru operates through 838 depots spread across various regions in Indonesia.

At a price point representing only one-third of bottled drinking water (AMDK), Air Minum Biru provides high-quality water using 100 per cent ozone technology, while encouraging the use of reusable gallons as part of an effort to reduce plastic packaging waste. Amidst these changing consumer behaviours, Air Minum Biru has once again won the Top Brand Award 2026 in the Refillable Drinking Water category. The award was presented during the Top Brand Award 2026 ceremony held on 29 July 2026 at the Hotel Mulia Senayan, Jakarta.

“We are grateful to have won the Top Brand Award 2026 once again. For us, this award is a sign of consumer trust and a reminder that innovation must always follow changing societal needs,” said the Founder and Director of PT Biru Semesta Disemesta Abadi, Yantje Wongso.

He added, “As consumers increasingly seek solutions that offer quality, cost efficiency, and environmental care in a single choice, we believe Biru’s refillable drinking water model will become increasingly relevant in the future. Our commitment is to continue providing services that meet these needs with consistent quality standards.”

The award reflects Biru’s strong position based on the three indicators used in Top Brand research: Mind Share (brand recall), Market Share (brand preference in the market), and Commitment Share (consumer loyalty).

Shifting societal behaviours, such as the increasing use of tumblers for refilling water, are positively impacting the drinking water industry. Carrying a tumbler is becoming common, with many consumers visiting coffee shops with their own containers as part of an eco-friendly lifestyle and to receive discounts. At home, the use of refillable water has long been a choice for many families, evolving from a mere cost-saving measure into a practice that combines expenditure efficiency with environmental concern.

This shift is driven by economic factors. The NielsenIQ Indonesia Mid-Year Consumer Outlook report shows that Indonesian consumers are becoming more cautious with their spending and are focusing more on value in every purchasing decision. Similarly, the PwC Voice of the Consumer 2025 survey indicates that the cost-of-living pressure remains a primary concern for Indonesians. Furthermore, 62 per cent of Indonesian consumers expressed concern about climate change, and 57 per cent prefer products with more environmentally friendly packaging.

The combination of economic considerations and environmental awareness is driving consumers to seek solutions that address both. In various product categories, the refillable model is becoming a relevant alternative by offering cost efficiency without sacrificing benefits. This phenomenon is evident in the drinking water category, where the refill model allows the public to obtain quality water at a lower price while helping to reduce single-use plastic packaging.

Handi Irawan D, the Founder of Top Brand Award, noted that these changing consumer behaviours are reflected in the Top Brand research results. “Today’s consumers no longer consider only price or brand popularity. They are increasingly paying attention to long-term benefits and how a product or service can meet more than one need simultaneously. In many categories, brands that can provide relevant value to consumers’ lives have a greater chance of being chosen and building loyalty,” said Handable.

Yantje Wongso added that the public is no longer just looking for cheaper products, but for broader benefits. “Previously, consumers chose refillable water primarily due to price. Now, their considerations have evolved. They seek maintained quality, better economic value, and a more environmentally responsible choice. Consumers no longer want to choose between being thrifty or being sustainable; they want both. We see this shift reflected in the year-on-year growth of Air Minum Biru’s customers, signalling increasing consumer trust in the quality refillable water model.”
