Air and Water Quality in Jabodetabek Deteriorates, Environment Minister Scrutinises Companies
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq is continuing efforts to conduct strict oversight of various business activities suspected of causing the decline in air and surface water quality, particularly in the Jabodetabek area. According to him, air quality in the region shows a downward trend.
“Today and henceforth, we will conduct close observations on all business units across the country that contribute primarily to the decline in our air quality, especially in heavily agglomerated areas like Jabodetabek. In Jabodetabek, air quality is deteriorating almost every day; the number of areas with declining air quality is increasing every year, every month, even every week,” Hanif stated at the PROPER 2025 Environmental Awards event on Tuesday (7/4/2026).
Not only air, but surface water quality is in a similar state. He said that at least 13 major rivers in the Jabodetabek area are in a moderately to heavily polluted status.
“Then, our surface water quality is also not too good; almost all or 13 major rivers in Jabodetabek in Jakarta are in a quality position of moderate to heavy pollution,” he explained.
Beyond that, the reduction in land cover also impacts biodiversity loss. Therefore, he urged all parties, including companies, to jointly preserve the environment. He also expressed thanks to companies that have participated in maintaining the environment to keep it preserved and sustainable.
