AINAKI explains AI's impact on animation industry: it won't replace humans

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Animation Industry Association (AINAKI) believes the development of artificial intelligence (AI) will have an impact on the animation industry, particularly in work processes, but will not necessarily replace the role of animators.

AINAKI Chairman Daryl Wilson said AI can be used as a tool to assist the animation production process. According to him, the final decision in using AI remains in the hands of humans who have the knowledge and ability to assess what the technology produces.

“With AI development progressing so rapidly in a short time, it will certainly impact the industry and especially this profession. However, I see AI not replacing humans, because we at the studio conduct research using AI in several aspects across team divisions, so AI is a tool,” Daryl said during his visit to the ANTARA Heritage Center in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Daryl believes AI’s ability to generate output still depends on the information and direction provided by its users. The results produced by AI must also be re-evaluated by humans to ensure they meet production needs.

“AI will be smart if the user can provide correct information, and when AI produces a proposal, for example, we must evaluate it until it matches what we want. So, ultimately, the decision remains a human decision even when we use AI,” he said.

According to him, professional knowledge and experience are still needed to determine the final results that meet production requirements. If AI is not yet able to produce something that meets the needs, manual processes are still required.

Daryl likened the development of AI to the arrival of automatic cutting tools that change work processes but do not eliminate human knowledge about materials and how to use them.

He believes this change means animation industry workers need to understand new technology while maintaining their existing knowledge and skills. In this way, AI can be used to support work processes, while determining quality and final results still requires human involvement.
