AI-Powered Chinese Satellites Set Orbital Imaging Speed Record in 1.5 Hours
Beijing (ANTARA) - Two optical satellites, Dongpo-13 and Dongpo-14, part of a constellation of six satellites developed by the Chinese companies MinoSpace and Huantian Space, transmitted high-definition remote sensing images within 1.5 hours of reaching orbit on Wednesday (22 July).
The feat set a new speed record for satellites developed by private Chinese companies.
The achievement surpassed the previous record of under two hours, set in May this year. The faster timing demonstrates improved responsiveness and technological strength in China’s commercial remote sensing capabilities, according to Chang Wujun, deputy general manager of satellite manufacturer MinoSpace.
Although the technology supports a wide range of applications, from agriculture and forestry to disaster relief and urban planning, imaging speed remains the key benchmark of service value.
Conventional systems often require days from task assignment to image delivery. In emergency situations, such as floods or landslides, every hour that can be shaved off can make a crucial difference in decision-making.
According to Chang, MinoSpace now employs artificial intelligence-based onboard processing to identify targets, detect anomalies and prioritise data transmission while the satellite is still in orbit.
This processing overcomes a common bottleneck of downloading and processing massive volumes of raw data at ground stations, enabling near real-time information for disaster monitoring, emergency response efforts and dynamic surveillance.
