Jakarta, VIVA — Indonesia, through the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi), is promoting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) oriented towards public interest and social development.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria stated that the global impact of AI currently stands at a level of "six out of ten". Advances in AI technology, he argued, still need to be accompanied by efforts to ensure their benefits are felt equitably by society, particularly in developing nations.

"Digital transformation cannot stop at the provision of infrastructure. What is needed is meaningful access, so that technology truly becomes a solution for people's lives," he said on Saturday, 21 February 2026.

Indonesia emphasised that the principal challenge ahead is not solely the development of increasingly sophisticated AI technology, but ensuring that such technology is capable of addressing the real needs of society — from healthcare and education to local economic empowerment.

Indonesia participated in the India AI Impact Summit 2026, appearing alongside Togo and Egypt. The three nations discussed how developing countries can direct the use of AI to generate tangible benefits for their populations.

Indonesia's participation in the panel reflects an important shift in global technology governance, whereby Global South nations are no longer merely consumers of technology but are beginning to play a role as actors shaping the direction of global AI development.

In discussions among Global South leaders, the delegation from Togo highlighted the importance of building digital talent capacity and public institutional readiness to adopt AI responsibly.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian delegation stressed the need for an AI governance framework that balances technological innovation with public protection and national data sovereignty.

Indonesia shared its experience as an archipelagic nation with a high degree of geographical diversity, where digital connectivity and technology serve as vital instruments for equitable public service delivery.

With more than 80 per cent of the population now having internet access, the focus of Indonesia's digital development has shifted from expanding access to improving the quality of technology utilisation, including the use of AI for public services and social development.

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 served as an important moment for developing nations to strengthen global collaboration in building AI that is inclusive, trustworthy, and oriented towards public benefit.
