From how we work, learn, and communicate to how we make decisions, AI technology has become an inseparable part of daily existence. The presence of various generative AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, has ushered in a new era offering speed, convenience, and efficiency.

However, behind these benefits, a vital question arises for the higher education sector: will AI strengthen human intelligence or weaken it? As the Head of the Institute for Educational and Learning Development (LPPP) at Nusa Mandiri University (UNM), a campus known for Digital Business, I view AI as an extraordinary auxiliary tool. Nevertheless, this technology can become a threat if used without adequate critical awareness and ethics.

AI is capable of helping students find references in seconds, drafting outlines, summarising materials, and even generating initial research ideas. These capabilities certainly add value to the learning process. However, when students begin to accept AI outputs entirely without the process of thinking, analysing, and verifying, original intelligence is threatened.

The educational world must not get trapped in mere technological euphoria. The primary goal of education is not to produce individuals who can simply use AI, but to produce humans capable of critical, creative, and innovative thinking. AI must not replace human thought processes; instead, it should serve as a means to strengthen human intellectual capabilities.

Dependency on AI is becoming visible in various academic environments. Many students now prefer asking machines for answers rather than conducting in-depth literature exploration. Consequently, the learning process, which should build analytical and problem-solving skills, faces a potential decline in quality. In reality, critical thinking is a competency that is increasingly required in the digital era. Modern industry does not only need graduates who can operate technology, but those who can understand problems, analyse data, make decisions, and produce innovative solutions.

Therefore, the correct approach is not to ban AI in educational settings, but to teach how to use it wisely. Students must understand that AI is not an infallible source of truth. The information produced must still be verified, compared with credible academic sources, and analysed critically.

In this context, the role of lecturers becomes increasingly strategic. Lecturers no longer function solely as deliverers of material, but as facilitators who guide students in using technology responsibly. Lecturers need to encourage students to treat AI as a learning partner, not a substitute for the thinking process.

At Nusa Mandiri University (UNM), the development of digital competence is always accompanied by the strengthening of analytical skills, creativity, and academic ethics. Students are encouraged not only to understand AI technology but also to develop AI-based solutions that can provide a real impact on society. This approach is vital because the future will not be won by those who can merely use technology, but by those who can create, develop, and utilise technology to solve life’s various challenges.

Ultimately, AI is not a threat to human intelligence. The real threat emerges when humans stop thinking due to excessive technological dependency. Therefore, we must ensure that the presence of AI acts as a catalyst to produce a generation that is smarter, more creative, and more innovative. The AI era is no reason to surrender reasoning to machines. Rather, this is the time for the educational world to produce a generation capable of using artificial intelligence to strengthen their original intelligence. Because the best technology still requires humans capable of thinking.
