Indonesia’s development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology is projected to have a market potential of USD 243.5 billion or around Rp 4,106 trillion. In addition, the transition to a green economy up to 2030 is expected to create about 1.8 million green jobs. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said the potential would be part of the national economic transformation based on technology and sustainability. ‘For Indonesia, generative AI has the potential to create a market of USD 243.5 billion from the national economy and technology,’ Airlangga said at the World Engineering Day (WED) event in Jakarta on Wednesday 4 March 2026. Indonesia sees this momentum as an opportunity to strengthen its position in the global digital ecosystem. However, Airlangga acknowledged that Indonesia still faces the challenge of a shortage of engineers. In developing the semiconductor industry, around 15,000 engineers are needed to support strengthening national capacity. ‘The challenge is that we still lack engineers and therefore the government is pushing, including for the development of semiconductors; we need 15,000 engineers,’ he said. On the other hand, the transition to a green economy up to 2030 is estimated to create around 1.8 million green jobs. This potential is aligned with the sustainable development agenda that prioritises energy efficiency, emission reductions, and the use of environmentally friendly technology. Airlangga emphasised the importance of collaboration between engineering institutions, the global engineers community, and the business sector to support this transformation. He said such synergy is needed so that technology development, including AI and digital infrastructure such as data centres, can progress in tandem with achieving national development targets. With adequate human resources, the government hopes that the deployment of generative AI technology and the green economy transition can drive inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
