Indonesia possesses an ideal combination of a large population, rapid digital economic growth, and increasing demand for computing capacity and modern data centres. This makes Indonesia a strategic location for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure to serve both domestic and regional needs. This has encouraged US-based AI infrastructure company Synapse Power to announce a US$300 million investment plan to build next-generation AI infrastructure and data centres in Indonesia. Synapse Power Vice President Simon Schmidt said the investment represents a strategic step by the company to strengthen the national digital economy ecosystem while supporting the acceleration of AI-based technological transformation. He added that the investment will focus on developing high-performance AI computing infrastructure that can be utilised by technology companies, research institutions, startups, the education sector, healthcare services, and various industries that increasingly rely on artificial intelligence to boost productivity and efficiency. Simon said Indonesia is one of the company’s priority expansion countries because it holds great potential as a centre for digital economic growth in the Southeast Asian region. “Indonesia has extraordinary potential to become one of the world’s largest digital economy centres. We believe the future is not only built by AI software, but also by the infrastructure that enables AI to run. A country with strong AI infrastructure will be the country that leads innovation in the future,” Simon stated in Jakarta on Wednesday (10/6/2026). He noted that AI development has now surpassed its function as a supporting technology and has become a primary foundation for various economic sectors. “Therefore, the availability of robust digital infrastructure is an important factor in ensuring a country’s competitiveness in the data-driven economic era,” he said. He affirmed that in addition to strengthening national digital capacity, this investment project is projected to deliver a significant economic impact. During the construction phase, the project is estimated to create hundreds of jobs, while upon operation it will also open up high-skilled employment opportunities in information technology, systems engineering, cybersecurity, data centre operations, and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, Synapse Power plans to establish collaborations with universities, research institutions, technology companies, and local developer communities to accelerate the growth of the national AI ecosystem. “A digital talent development programme through technology training and knowledge transfer is also part of the company’s commitment,” he said. He added that with the US$300 million investment, the company hopes to help strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global digital economy map while encouraging the emergence of AI-based innovation from Southeast Asia. “The presence of large-scale AI infrastructure will also serve as an important foundation for Indonesia to capture new economic opportunities amidst the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology at the global level,” he concluded.
