Or, more subtly, a social media timeline decided what news we deserved to read. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become so integrated into daily life that we rarely ask: to what extent should this machine be allowed to interfere in our lives, and at what point must it stop?

This question is not merely academic discourse. It arises every time a bank algorithm rejects a credit application without a clear explanation, every time an automated recruitment system filters certain names from the interview list, or every time a health chatbot gives incorrect medical advice to someone in a panic. At these points, the “moral boundary” of AI ceases to be theory and becomes a very real necessity.

Efficiency Over Empathy

The appeal of AI lies in its speed and consistency. It does not tire, is not emotional, and can process millions of data points in seconds. Yet that is precisely where the problem begins. Machines operate based on programmed patterns and objectives, not conscience. Because it does not know what it feels like to be fired, rejected, or discriminated against, when a recruitment algorithm replicates bias from historical data, it does so without the slightest sense of guilt.

Computer scientist Stuart Russell, co-author of a seminal textbook on artificial intelligence, has long emphasised that AI systems are fundamentally designed to act rationally to achieve a given goal through data processing and machine learning. The problem is that what is “rational” for a machine is not necessarily “humane” for us. An algorithm can be extremely efficient at hitting a target while being completely blind to the social impact of its decisions. This is the first moral boundary: technical efficiency must not be allowed to replace empathetic consideration, especially in areas that determine people’s livelihoods, such as employment, health, or financial access.

In everyday life, this feels very close. How many of us have been disappointed because a customer service complaint was only answered by a disconnected automated template? Or felt judged by a system with no way to appeal to a human being? That is the real face of AI that is efficient but has lost its human side.

Unignorable Risks

Some may dismiss concerns about AI as exaggerated, a kind of science fiction fear. However, this view is difficult to maintain, as the pioneers of the technology themselves are the most vigilant. Yoshua Bengio, a key figure behind the development of deep learning and a Turing Award laureate, has openly stated that the way AI systems are currently trained could potentially lead to systems that ultimately act against human interests. He stressed that humanity still has the control to steer development onto a safer path, provided action is taken now, not later. On various occasions, Bengio has argued that ignoring the potential for serious harm from AI is becoming increasingly difficult to justify as the capabilities of these systems grow. Such statements carry weight because they come not from uninformed outside observers, but from someone who helped build the very foundations of the technology.

These concerns also manifest on a much simpler, closer-to-home scale. Children growing up with voice assistants that always say “yes,” teenagers addicted to validation from algorithmic social media recommendations, and parents entrusting financial decisions to robo-advisors without truly understanding the risks. All these are small forms of the same big question: who is really in control, humans or the systems we have created?

Data as a Mirror of Social Inequality

One of the most dangerous illusions about AI is the assumption that machines are neutral because they “just follow the data.” Yet the data itself is a record of an unequal world, full of prejudice and often unfair. AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru, widely known for her work on algorithmic bias and founder of the Distributed AI Research Institute, has stressed that existing social and structural problems cannot simply be ignored in discussions about AI technology. In other words, the bias that appears on our screens is not solely a machine error; it is a reflection of long-standing inequalities around us, now amplified on a much larger and faster scale.

Imagine a facial recognition system that consistently makes more errors on people with darker skin, or a digital lending algorithm that silently makes things harder for certain groups. This is not a distant scenario in some other country; such practices also lurk in our daily lives every time we fill out a digital form, upload a selfie for identity verification, or apply for a loan through an app. This is the third moral boundary that is easiest to overlook: the obligation to constantly question whose data is being used to train these machines, and who stands to be harmed by them.

Bridging the Gap Between Sophistication and Humanity

Ultimately, artificial intelligence is not an independent entity responsible for itself. It is a mirror of the values, interests, and even the negligence of the people who design it. The moral boundary of AI, therefore, is actually our own moral boundary: the extent to which we dare to place empathy, justice, and responsibility above mere admiration for technological sophistication.
