Zettabyte, a global AI computing company, has asserted that computing should be measured by the quality of work delivered rather than hardware specifications or hourly usage rates, amid an unprecedented surge in global demand for AI computing tokens. The statement was made during the AI Server Supply Chain Seminar organised by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taipei, where Zettabyte emphasised the importance of quality computing as a standard for sovereign computing. ITRI, founded in 1973, has played a pivotal role in transforming Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and has spawned hundreds of start-ups and spin-offs, including United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and the renowned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Stephen Su, Senior Vice President of ITRI, noted that Taiwan’s excellence in semiconductors and AI hardware is unquestioned, and developing rigorous standards for measuring computing is the logical next step. Zettabyte’s core argument, presented at the jointly held seminar, is that computing clusters should be assessed based on the work output they deliver, not the amount of hardware they contain. Jeff Lin, Executive Director of Zettabyte, explained that the AI industry has traditionally measured infrastructure by GPU count and hourly rental cost, neither of which answers the key question for paying customers: how much ‘useful’ AI is being produced and how to measure it reliably. The company’s zSUITE platform measures how much genuinely useful computing a GPU cluster produces, allowing operators to identify gaps in reliability and efficiency that can add 15 per cent to total costs. Zettabyte is accelerating software licensing for its zSUITE platform for sovereign use in Taiwan and is collaborating with ITRI and several leading Taiwanese universities with AI programmes and research laboratories, viewing this as an investment in the next generation of AI infrastructure human resources and a contribution to maintaining Taiwan’s leadership in the global AI ecosystem.
