AI Data Centre Project in Jatiluhur Temporarily Suspended
The construction of an artificial intelligence (AI) based data centre in the Jatiluhur Reservoir area, Purwakarta Regency, has been temporarily suspended as the environmental impact assessment (AMDAL) and building permit (PBG) processes remain incomplete. In addition to the licensing requirements, water usage has become a significant concern, as the reservoir supplies essential needs for both the local community and agriculture.
The Head of the West Java Communication and Informatics Department, Adi Komar, stated that the West Java Provincial Government supports the investment in the data centre. However, the company must fulfil all regulatory requirements before proceeding with construction.
“The West Java Provincial Government certainly supports existing developments. However, there are several aspects regarding regulations and the fulfilment of applicable provisions that we are concerned about, given the significant scale of this project,” said Adi, as reported on Wednesday (30/09/2026).
Adi explained that the authority for project licensing lies with the Purwakarta Regency Government, while the West Java Provincial Government is responsible for oversight and coordination. He noted that because the environmental impact assessment process is still ongoing, project works have been paused.
“The project work was halted yesterday. It has been temporarily suspended while the process is being finalised,” Adi said.
Beyond the licensing issues, the West Java Provincial Government is addressing public concerns regarding the data centre’s water requirements. Residents fear that the project will consume large quantities of water, potentially affecting the supply from the Jatiluhur Reservoir.
“The Governor has personally checked and ensured that the construction of the data centre does not disrupt established regulations, including other public services, such as water availability,” Adi stated. He emphasised that the presence of the data centre will not interfere with the water supply for the community or the agricultural sector.
Adi also mentioned that the Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, has requested that the licensing process be handled swiftly. Simultaneously, the company has been instructed to complete all necessary requirements for the construction of the data centre.
