Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, has affirmed that the high level of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in Indonesia must translate into increased national productivity, the creation of economic value, and the strengthening of the nation’s competitiveness. In a press statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, Menkomdigi stated that although the level of AI adoption in Indonesia has reached 92 per cent, its utilisation for productive activities and the creation of added economic value still needs to be expanded. “Even with 92 per cent AI adoption, the use of AI for productivity in Indonesia is still limited, which is why we are pleased to see the emergence of new start-ups today,” she said. Meutya invited start-up players to view Indonesia as one of the largest digital markets in the Asia-Pacific region. “This growth did not happen naturally. It is driven by technological innovation, the transformation of traditional sectors, and, most importantly, Indonesia’s digital human resources, which are driving high and significant economic growth in the Southeast Asian region,” said Menkomdigi Meutya. She encouraged Indonesia’s digital talents to continue innovating so that Indonesia can not only be a market but also a place where the latest innovations in technology, especially AI, can be born. As part of strengthening the ecosystem, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has also established the Garuda Spark Innovation Hub as a collaborative space for AI-based start-ups with global technology companies and venture capital. “We want to move from being just a digital market to becoming an AI innovation hub in ASEAN,” said Meutya. The government is collaborating with global companies to accelerate the learning process and improve the skills of Indonesia’s digital talents, including through the Google for Startups Accelerator programme, which has produced 63 start-ups since the collaboration between Kemkomdigi and Google Indonesia last year. “The 63 national start-ups that have completed this programme is not a small number. In fact, it is reported that there are 2,500 active start-ups in Indonesia that are directly contributing to providing digital economic value. This shows that start-ups are a driving force for the national digital economy,” said Meutya.
