The government has disclosed an estimated total budget for building railway lines on the islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), stated that around Rp 1,200 trillion is needed to construct 14,000 km of railway lines. “We are trying to calculate that if we want to add, say, these 14,000 kilometres in the coming years, the cost is estimated at around Rp 1,200 trillion, over 20 years until 2045,” AHY said at Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 22 April 2026. He explained that the project is targeted for completion by 2045. Thus, the total annual budget required would amount to Rp 60 trillion to Rp 65 trillion. “If divided over 20 years, approximately Rp 60 to 65 trillion must be prepared each year to develop and meet the targets or roadmap,” AHY clarified. AHY added that this total is not yet final. As various factors, such as the geographical conditions of each area, can influence the budget magnitude. “But this is not yet the final calculation. We will still refine it, because once again, building and developing infrastructure is also highly dependent on the geographical conditions of the areas we will develop,” he stated. “But at least, this is the initial calculation that we can provide as material for discussion,” AHY concluded.
