Jakarta – Democratic Party Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, known as AHY, has reminded opposition parties that their role is to provide constructive input and criticism, not to divide the nation. “When in opposition, of course, there is an interest in offering views, even criticism, but it must be constructive and accompanied by solutions. It must not divide the nation or discredit everything as if it were all wrong,” AHY told reporters at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, 22 June 2026. “However, when there is something that is correct and represents the people’s aspirations, the government must also listen and be willing to conduct evaluations,” he added. On the other hand, he said he respects the stance of political parties, including the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), which is in opposition. Nevertheless, he stressed that national interests must be placed above personal interests. “I respect all political parties that have certain attitudes and views. Everyone has an agenda, everyone has interests. But let us place our shared and national interests above partisan interests,” AHY stated. AHY emphasised that the Democratic Party also has experience being in opposition. “We have also been in opposition, so the Democratic Party can be said to have a complete set of experience and track record. We are grateful for all of that,” he said. He assessed that Indonesia’s democracy will be healthy, partly due to PDIP’s presence as a balancing force. AHY also advised all Democratic Party members in the House of Representatives (DPR RI) to maintain parliamentary harmony and provide positive input to the government. “So I see our democracy will grow and be healthy, even more mature, if such a spirit is present. Checks and balances are also a necessity in any democracy, regardless of political choice. Furthermore, the Democratic Party also has the spirit to continue providing the best input, which comes from the people, and hopefully we can continue to safeguard this in Indonesia’s political and democratic life,” he said.
