AHY: Nusantara's Cultural Wealth Must Be Preserved and Passed Down

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, also known as AHY, stated that the cultural wealth of the Nusantara archipelago must be continuously protected and passed down to future generations. He made these remarks while opening the Karapan Sapi (bull racing) competition in Bangkalan, East Java, as part of the celebrations leading up to the 25th anniversary of the Democratic Party.

According to him, Karapan Sapi is not merely a tradition of the Madurese people, but belongs to all of Indonesia. In an increasingly modern and digital era, he believes that such cultures and traditions become even more crucial to preserve.

“Who else will protect it if not us?” AHY said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Sunday.

He noted that a nation possesses traditions that define its identity. Much like rodeo in the United States or matadors in Spain, Karapan Sapi is a unique Indonesian cultural heritage that holds immense historical, social, and economic value.

Consequently, he expressed hope that the Karapan Sapi event would serve not only as a competitive arena but also as a means to strengthen social bonds and bolster community unity.

“Amidst competition and rivalry, we must remain united. Unity is the primary capital for building a more advanced Indonesia,” he said.

He also assessed that the Karapan Sapi tradition reflects the character of the Madurese people, who are known for their high work ethic, courage in facing challenges, and commitment to honour.

“Those three values—hard work, courage to face change, and honour—are strongly reflected in Karapan Sapi,” he added.
