Democratic Party Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that the political dynamics occurring today are normal and fair, responding to journalists’ questions regarding the political position of PDIP raised by several politicians. He said he respects all political parties, each of which has its own stance and views. According to him, every political party has its own agenda and interests, but national interests must be placed above partisan interests. “Our focus is the economy. We want to ensure economic growth is maintained, people’s purchasing power is preserved, jobs are created, poverty can be reduced, and inequality can be suppressed,” AHY said after attending a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Budget Committee at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Monday. When serving as a government party, he said, the responsibility is to ensure the administration succeeds and is able to realise its political promises to the people. Meanwhile, when in opposition, he noted, the Democratic Party’s task at that time was to provide constructive views and criticism and to offer solutions, rather than dividing the nation. “And not to discredit as if everything is wrong,” he added. However, when there are genuine public aspirations, he said, the government must be able to listen and evaluate. He also stated that Indonesian democracy will be healthy if the principle of checks and balances is maintained. Previously, PKB faction chairman Jazilul Fawaid expressed hope that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) would take a firm stance on its political position, whether choosing to join the government coalition or become the opposition. He made the statement in relation to the issue of a PDIP cadre figure participating in a recent demonstration with students in Jakarta. Regarding this, he said, PDIP does not need to be “grey” about its political position. “If you want to be outside the government, please do. But do not be grey. That is what I mean,” Jazilul said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Thursday (18/6).
