AHY Calls on Asian Countries to Build Collective Resilience to Face Global Crisis

The world today faces increasingly complex global pressures, spanning fragmented supply chains, an energy crisis, technological competition, and increasingly extreme climate change, AHY said in a written statement on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. He delivered the remarks as the keynote speaker at the opening of Ecosperity Week 2026, hosted by Temasek in Singapore on Tuesday, 19 May. AHY warned that tensions in the Strait of Hormuz demonstrate how fragile the global system is today and that energy shocks can traverse borders rapidly, affecting people’s lives across the world. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that Asia still has a substantial opportunity to become a new global growth hub if it can build regional resilience collectively. The message aligns with the scientific warning delivered by Professor Johan Rockström during Ecosperity Week. Through the Planetary Health Check, Rockström warned that the stability of Earth’s systems is under serious pressure. The warning reinforces the urgency that sustainable development should not stop at commitments but be translated into real action, investment, and cross-border cooperation. He also highlighted Ecosperity Week 2026’s overarching theme, ‘Powered by Innovation, Driven with Intent’. In his view, innovation and capital are important, but direction, consistency, and prioritisation in the transition are even more decisive factors. According to AHY, President Prabowo Subianto’s vision to strengthen food, energy, and water security forms the main foundation for Indonesia’s development direction today. He stressed that sustainability must not be viewed as a separate agenda from everyday needs. In his speech, AHY also mentioned rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts after Cyclone Senyar (Siklon Senyar) in Sumatra, and the launch of the Giant Sea Wall Pantura as part of Indonesia’s tangible commitment to building coastal resilience, food security, and protecting communities in the long term. AHY emphasised that Indonesia plays a vital role in building regional resilience through adaptive infrastructure, strengthening coastal resilience, and the development of green industries. He argued that Asian nations must balance economic growth, energy security, and protection for those most vulnerable to climate crises. Meanwhile, Temasek Holdings Chairman Teo Chee Hean, in his remarks, noted the geopolitical dynamics increasingly affecting investment, trade, supply chains, and global stability. He said Asia needs to strengthen resilience without losing the spirit of collaboration and openness. The message aligns with AHY’s call for the region not only to withstand uncertainty but to build a safer, more sustainable, and more inclusive future.
