AHY backs North Maluku development to tackle economic disparities
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) will give special attention to accelerating development in North Maluku. The move is part of efforts to address economic inequality.
This was stated by AHY during a meeting with North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda in Jakarta on Friday (29 May 2026).
“We see a strong vision and meticulous planning. The Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure will coordinate this proposal with Bappenas, the Ministry of Public Works, and other relevant ministries to ensure infrastructure development, particularly strategic roads, is swiftly implemented and delivers tangible benefits for the public,” AHY said in a written statement on Friday (29 May 2026).
AHY also emphasised the importance of integrated and sustainable development approaches.
“This aligns with North Maluku’s long-term target to become a new growth centre in Eastern Indonesia by 2029 and host national events based on tourism and natural resource potential,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sherly Tjoanda outlined regional development achievements showing positive trends, including several awards from the Ministry of Home Affairs, particularly for reducing stunting rates in six regencies and cities.
“On the other hand, North Maluku’s economic growth of 34.3 percent, significantly above the national average, is seen as an indicator of successful mineral downstreaming, especially nickel,” she said.
However, she noted the region still faces challenges, particularly in equitable welfare distribution.
“The main challenge currently is ensuring welfare distribution is more evenly spread through strengthening basic infrastructure,” Sherly Tjoanda concluded.
