AHY Assures Measured Adjustments to Air Ticket Prices
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The government has assured that adjustments to the maximum air ticket prices will be carried out in a measured way amidst global energy price pressures caused by geopolitical conflicts. This policy is considered important to maintain a balance between the sustainability of the aviation industry and the public’s purchasing power.
The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, said that the government understands the public’s concerns regarding potential increases in air ticket prices ahead of the school holiday period and Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah. “It is indeed not always easy to face global dynamics like this, but hopefully there will be an improvement in the situation and at the same time (air ticket prices) will not burden the public too much,” said AHY in Jakarta, Sunday (17/5/2026).
AHY conveyed that global geopolitical pressures still affect various economic sectors, including national air transportation. International conflicts are considered to have a direct impact on rising global energy prices, which then increases airline operational costs.
As Coordinating Minister overseeing the Ministry of Transportation, AHY believes that adjusting flight tariffs is not a simple decision because the government must maintain a balance between the sustainability of the aviation industry and the economic conditions of the people. “Therefore, countries around the world, including Indonesia, must take steps that are not easy, but adjustments are necessary, and this will indeed have an impact on the public, but this is what must be done,” he said.
The government is currently continuing to discuss various policy options with the Ministry of Transportation to ensure that tariff adjustments remain within reasonable and measured limits. Coordination is also being carried out with airlines to find solutions to deal with operational cost pressures due to soaring global energy prices.
AHY hopes that the global geopolitical situation, especially the conflict in the Middle East, can improve soon so that the pressure on energy prices and the aviation sector gradually eases. “Because the increasing global energy prices, including for the aviation sector, are a concern for all of us, we also hope that this crisis situation in the Middle East can improve over time,” said AHY.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation is adjusting the fuel surcharge for air transportation in response to fluctuations in avtur prices while maintaining the balance between airline operational costs and affordable flight tariffs.
The Director General of Air Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, Lukman F Laisa, said that the adjustment was made according to the mechanism stipulated in regulations. “The fuel surcharge adjustment is carried out based on the mechanisms and formulas set forth in the regulations,” said Lukman in a statement in Jakarta, Saturday (16/5).
The government has established a Minister of Transportation Decree Number KM 1041 of 2026 concerning the Amount of Additional Costs as an impact of fuel price fluctuations for passenger class economy fares for scheduled domestic air transportation.
In this regulation, the amount of the fuel surcharge is determined based on the average avtur price set by aviation fuel providers. “The highest percentage surcharge ranges from 10 percent to 100 percent of the maximum fare by adjusting the applicable avtur price fluctuations,” said Lukman.
This policy is expected to maintain the sustainability of the national aviation industry while still paying attention to consumer protection and affordable air transportation fares.
