AHY Announces 15 Deaths from Collision Between KA Argo Bromo and KRL
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), has revealed that the number of fatalities from the collision between the KA Argo Bromo train and a Commuter Line (KRL) at Bekasi Timur Station has increased to 15 as of this afternoon. Meanwhile, 88 people have sustained injuries.
“As of this afternoon, 15 people have been declared deceased. This is undoubtedly a great loss and the deepest sorrow. We extend our condolences to the victims’ families and pray that they are granted the best in the sight of Allah SWT, the Almighty God,” AHY stated to reporters at the Bekasi City General Hospital (RSUD) in West Java, on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
In addition to the fatalities, hundreds of surviving passengers are currently undergoing intensive treatment at several hospitals in the Bekasi area. AHY noted that a total of 10 hospitals are handling the victims, including the RSUD Kota Bekasi, which he inspected personally.
“This afternoon, I also wanted to see firsthand the passengers who were successfully evacuated and rescued, and who are now receiving intensive care. There are 10 hospitals in the Bekasi City and Regency areas. And we are currently at RSUD Kota Bekasi,” he explained.
He mentioned that the conditions of the surviving victims include some still awaiting further medical procedures, such as operations due to serious injuries.
“Earlier, I saw several who were still in the rooms, waiting for operations and so on. I also spoke with some patients. Various injuries, including fractures or dislocations in the shoulders, legs, and arms. But they were all able to communicate and were accompanied by their families,” he said.
During the evacuation process, AHY emphasised the importance of swift handling on the ground. He revealed that 163 ambulances were deployed simultaneously to transport the victims to various hospitals since last night.
“Last night, hundreds of ambulances were mobilised; 163 ambulances were deployed simultaneously to take the successfully evacuated victims to various hospitals, including this one. So they could be treated quickly. Because in critical situations, the speed of evacuation handling is what determines and saves lives,” he stated.
AHY also appreciated the cooperation among various parties in managing the victims, from local government, hospitals, to related institutions such as PT KAI, Jasa Raharja, and BPJS Kesehatan.
“And thank you for the swift handling by the mayor and the team, including RSUD and KAI. Of course, in collaboration with Jasa Raharja as the insurance provider and BPJS Kesehatan, all striving for the best,” he revealed.
He affirmed that the government’s current focus is to ensure all victims receive maximum care until they recover.
“Therefore, thank you for the hard work and swift actions by everyone involved in the evacuation process. The main point is that we now want to ensure that all victims can undergo proper medical treatment and recover soon after being treated, so they can resume their activities as before,” he said.
Furthermore, AHY noted that the majority of the victims were workers on their way home, with most being women using the dedicated women’s carriage.
“On average, from what I asked earlier, they were heading home from work. Returning from various locations and workplaces, almost all women. There were some men, but the majority were female workers using the KRL women’s carriage,” he explained.
Amid the grief from the incident, the surviving victims are said to feel grateful for emerging from the shocking event.
“Of course, those who survived feel very grateful, as it can be said this was a miracle in such a shocking incident, and the hope once again is that we can prevent similar incidents from happening in the future,” he concluded.
