Ahmad Sahroni: Inadequate Judges' Salaries Could Trigger Bribery Cases
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, believes that inadequate judges’ salaries could potentially lead to bribery and undermine the legal system in Indonesia.
This was conveyed by Sahroni when asked about the urgency of increasing judges’ salaries in Indonesia and its impact on the legal system.
“From a performance perspective, it is clear that the inadequacy of judges’ salaries could potentially lead to judges accepting bribes, which would clearly damage the legal system in Indonesia,” said Sahroni when contacted by Kompas.com, Saturday (16/5/2026).
This is one of the reasons why Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives is advocating for the welfare of judges and other law enforcement officials.
“Currently, it is clear that judges in Indonesia do not receive adequate salaries and benefits. And I think this is unfair, how can we give them great responsibilities in this world and the afterlife to decide a case, but the appreciation is not commensurate,” said Sahroni.
“So, increasing the salaries and welfare of judges will clearly help maintain the quality of law enforcement in Indonesia,” he added.
“Currently, throughout ASEAN, we are recognised as having judges whose salaries have increased, and have surpassed Malaysia,” said Prabowo during the inauguration of the Ibu Marsinah Museum and Transit House in Nganjuk Regency, East Java, Saturday.
Prabowo said that the government has increased judges’ salaries since last year, especially for junior judges.
“Therefore, I had the honour of increasing judges’ salaries last year. The salaries of the most junior judges have increased by almost 300 percent, 280 percent,” he said.
“The salaries of our most junior judges are now twice that of judges in Malaysia,” said Prabowo.
