Jakarta – MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani has revealed that Try Sutrisno, Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, had previously requested him to amend the 1945 Constitution before Sutrisno’s death.

“He once spoke to us, during last Eid, expressing his wish that a fifth amendment to the 1945 Constitution be completed before he passed away,” Muzani said when met at the Sunda Kelapa Grand Mosque in Central Jakarta on Monday (2 March 2026).

Muzani stated that he has taken Sutrisno’s request seriously as the leader of the Indonesian MPR.

“He wanted this amendment to be undertaken to preserve unity, to maintain togetherness, and to ensure Indonesia’s better future,” he said.

Muzani noted that Sutrisno consistently demonstrated his views and dedication to the nation throughout his life.

“And in his twilight years, he remained deeply concerned with unity, solidarity, and mutual cooperation, devoting himself to the nation and state until his final days,” he added.

Try Sutrisno, Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, passed away on Monday, 2 March 2026. He breathed his last whilst receiving treatment at the Armed Forces Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Subroto in Central Jakarta.

Sutrisno had been hospitalised at RSPAD Gatot Subroto since 16 February 2026. According to his son Taufik, his father’s health had deteriorated due to advanced age, having reached 90 years old.

“Father’s condition declined with age; everything naturally diminishes at that age. There was no specific illness; rather, it was the natural decline that comes with advanced years, affecting his respiratory capacity and other functions,” Taufik said at RSPAD Gatot Subroto.

Medical teams from RSPAD Gatot Subroto and the Presidential office had provided Sutrisno with the best available treatment during his hospitalisation.
