Ahmad Muzani: Indonesia Could Leave the Board of Peace at Any Time, So Long as It Is by Consensus
Ahmad Muzani, the chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), said Indonesia could decide at any time to withdraw from membership of the Board of Peace (BoP) or the Council of Peace. Indonesia’s membership in the BoP has frequently been discussed by President Prabowo Subianto. Muzani made the remark in response to criticism by the United States (US), the initiator of the BoP, against Iran. ‘For Indonesia, joining and leaving the Board of Peace is something that could happen, as the President has mentioned several times,’ Muzani told reporters at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. Although free to decide when to exit, Muzani stressed that such a decision must be taken by mutual agreement. ‘We could leave at any time, but again, it must be by consensus,’ he said. He added that Indonesia’s joining the BoP was one of the steps to accelerate the process of Palestinian independence and reconstruction. ‘That is the main objective for the creation of the Board of Peace. But there is the issue with Iran; I think this is what the President was outlining more clearly last night,’ Muzani said. Previously, former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said President Prabowo Subianto would evaluate Indonesia’s membership in the BoP following the escalation of the US-Israel-Iran conflict. He spoke after a meeting with President Prabowo and former president‑vice president at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta on Tuesday evening, 3 March 2026. Hassan noted that an evaluation of Indonesia’s BoP membership was necessary given the evolving dynamics on the ground. The government will consider several aspects, including funding commitments and Indonesia’s troop deployments, which have long been described as among the largest in the mission. ‘The decision has not been taken yet. He will definitely evaluate and make the right decision in due course,’ Hassan said, quoting ANTARA, Wednesday, 4 March 2026. Regarding a possible exit from the BoP, Hassan said the President had not ruled out the option if the mission was deemed no longer aligned with the initial objectives, or its success was diminishing.
