Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi has instructed the Public Works and Public Housing Department (PUPR) to accelerate the installation of an armco bridge on the main Grobogan–Semarang City route. The bridge is to be erected on a road adjacent to the point where the Tuntang River embankment burst, causing the main road to be completely severed.

Luthfi stated that the road is crucial for communities as it serves as the primary corridor for logistics and the Lebaran homecoming journey. He therefore wants the road to be operational as soon as possible.

"The important thing is that this road can be used first, as it is the main homecoming route," said Luthfi during an inspection of the collapsed Tuntang River embankment site in Tinanding Village, Godong Sub-district, Grobogan Regency, on Tuesday, 17 February 2026.

Luthfi explained that short-term measures would be taken immediately to address the embankment breach on the Tuntang River. These measures include the closure of the breached embankment, to be carried out by the Provincial PUPR Department in coordination with the Major River Basin Authority (BBWS), and the construction of a bridge to reconnect the main route.

The temporary closure of the river embankment is expected to take three days, whilst reinforcement of the embankment will be completed within the following week.

On the same occasion, Luthfi said he would also request the PUPR Ministry to carry out normalisation of the Tuntang River, in a manner similar to what was done for the Wulan River. Whilst at the site, he even telephoned the PUPR Minister directly to request immediate normalisation of the Tuntang River.

"The sedimentation is extremely high. I will propose this to the ministry, as it falls under BBWS authority, to at least have it normalised," he said.

Luthfi explained that the collapse of the Tuntang River embankment in Demak and Grobogan regencies has affected areas in both regencies. He noted that the Tuntang River embankment has repeatedly experienced breaches.

Central Java Provincial PUPR Department Head Henggar Budi Anggoro confirmed that a provincial armco bridge had been relocated from Pati to Tinanding, Godong. It was scheduled to arrive at the site on Tuesday evening, 17 February 2026.

"Our target is one week — we are confident we can complete the armco bridge," he said.

The Tuntang River embankment collapsed on Monday, 16 February 2026. The breach point in Tinanding Village caused the main Grobogan–Semarang road to be completely severed. The incident was caused by heavy rainfall and water flows from the upstream Glugu and Tuntang rivers.

As a result, 42 villages across 10 sub-districts in Grobogan Regency were inundated by flooding. At least 9,000 households were affected and hundreds of hectares of rice paddies were submerged.
