The United States government is set to implement its latest economic operation, dubbed ‘Economic D-Day’, against Iran. President Donald Trump has already boasted that Iran will collapse.

Trump made the remarks just hours before the US imposed economic sanctions on Iran. The sanctions announcement was scheduled for 2.00pm Eastern Time (ET) on Monday, or 1.00am Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Tuesday.

‘Iran is totally collapsing,’ Trump said, as quoted by The Independent.

Trump has previously threatened to impose a package of economic punishments on Iran. Tehran has described Trump’s policy as ‘economic terrorism’.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also warned that the sanctions package for Iran would be the toughest in history. In an article for the Financial Times, Bessent described the Economic D-Day operation as the largest financial assault ever deployed against Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Head of Security, Mohsen Rezaei, threatened to retaliate in kind if the US proceeds with the plan. Rezaei also warned Iran’s neighbouring countries in the Gulf region not to participate in the implementation of the sanctions.

‘If Trump takes action, our confrontation will strike back like an earthquake,’ Rezaei threatened.

‘If the countries around Iran join America in their economic war, not a single drop of oil will leave the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. We will also target other oil export routes from the Persian Gulf,’ he concluded.
