Ahead of This Moment, Trump Wants to End the War Against Iran
A Time magazine report, citing several sources, indicates that US President Donald Trump is seeking a way out of his war with Iran. This is due to concerns that prolonged military operations could weaken the Republican Party’s position in the midterm congressional elections. The US leader wants to declare victory and end hostilities with Iran before the political damage becomes irreparable. “The window of opportunity is very narrow,” said a senior US official, as quoted by the news magazine. The report notes that Trump, worried about information leaks, announced to his aides a day before the operation against Iran that it had been cancelled. According to the sources, Trump arrived at his Mar-a-Lago residence on 27 February, where his aides gathered in a temporary operations centre. Trump was reportedly furious about the number of people present, including those he did not know or did not know well enough. At one point, the president announced that the operation had been cancelled, according to the report, then added that once the room was empty, he called back a small group of trusted aides, those expected to be present when the operation began. The midterm elections for both houses of Congress will take place on 3 November. The Republican Party currently holds majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
