The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has welcomed the planned state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia on 6–8 July 2026. Beyond strengthening bilateral relations, the MUI hopes the meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and PM Modi will yield a stronger commitment to championing tolerance, democracy, and regional and world peace. MUI Chairman for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim stated that the visit is an important momentum to tighten the strategic relationship between Indonesia and India, following President Prabowo’s earlier trip to the ‘Bollywood nation’. ‘We express appreciation for the reciprocal visit by the Indian PM to Indonesia after the Indonesian President visited India some time ago,’ Sudarnoto said in a written statement on Saturday, 4 July 2026. He noted that the meeting between the two leaders is expected not only to focus on their respective national interests but also to make a tangible contribution to international stability and peace. ‘The meeting between the Indian PM and the Indonesian President is certainly intended to strengthen strategic cooperation for their respective national interests and also for the benefit and peace of the world,’ he said. Sudarnoto assessed that Indonesia and India hold strategic positions as two major Asian countries that can play an important role in maintaining regional stability while encouraging the creation of a peaceful and harmonious society. ‘These two countries must be able to make an important contribution to efforts to realise tranquillity, security, regional peace, and a harmonious life among communities,’ he stated. In addition to strengthening cooperation in various fields, the MUI also hopes that the issue of religious tolerance will receive attention in the discussion agenda of the two heads of government. According to Sudarnoto, reinforcing the values of tolerance is an important part of maintaining the quality of democracy in each country. ‘It is highly expected that the discussions between these two leaders will also pay serious attention to the principles of religious tolerance as part of efforts to heal and strengthen democracy,’ he stressed. Previously, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty confirmed that PM Narendra Modi will conduct a state visit to Indonesia on 6–8 July 2026. During the visit, Modi is scheduled to meet President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on 7 July for a bilateral meeting and state banquet, before continuing his agenda in Yogyakarta.
