Ahead of Panda Bond Issuance, Purbaya Visits Beijing to Meet Chinese Finance Minister
Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa conducted a working visit to Beijing, China, and held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo’an at the Chinese Ministry of Finance office in Beijing on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. Purbaya explained that the meeting was part of the government’s strategy to strengthen access to development financing, expand the investor base, and deepen economic partnerships with strategic partner countries. “Indonesia is not waiting. We are moving early by building a strong and sustainable financing foundation, so that development can continue amidst various global challenges,” Purbaya said. He emphasised that his visit to Beijing was part of a long-term financing strategy that had been carefully planned by the government. This also reflects Indonesia’s commitment to continuously expand competitive sources of financing and strengthen the confidence of international investors. “This is part of planning that was arranged well in advance. The government continues to execute its financing strategy in a measured, disciplined, and long-term oriented manner,” he stated. One of the main agendas of the Finance Minister’s visit to Beijing was to prepare for the issuance of a sovereign Panda Bond. The government views this instrument as a strategic step to diversify financing sources and broaden the investor base, while simultaneously strengthening economic relations between Indonesia and China. The sovereign Panda Bond issuance is also expected to support the use of local currencies in bilateral transactions, known as Local Currency Transaction (LCT), and encourage the deepening of financial cooperation between the two countries. During the meeting, Purbaya stressed the importance of the close economic relationship between Indonesia and China. He expressed hope that both countries would continue to strengthen cooperation in various international forums, including the G20 Finance Track, the APEC Finance Ministers’ Process, and ASEAN+3. This working visit is expected to further strengthen Indonesia’s position in managing sustainable development financing, while expanding strategic partnership networks with global investors. The government is optimistic that this proactive step will provide long-term benefits for the national economy and strengthen Indonesia’s resilience in facing various global challenges.
