Ahead of Lebaran Mudik, Provincial Roads in DIY Damaged as DIY Government Admits Budget Is Only Enough for Patching
Ahead of Lebaran 2026 mudik, the condition of provincial roads in the Special Region of Yogyakarta remains problematic. The DIY Regional Government, through the Department of Public Works, Housing and Energy and Mineral Resources (PUPESDM DIY), previously noted that around 270 kilometres of provincial road segments in DIY were not yet in a satisfactory condition. The total length of provincial roads under the jurisdiction of the DIY regional government is 678 kilometres.
The road damage is spread across several areas, including Tempel, Gunungkidul, and Godean. To date, the proportion of provincial roads in adequate condition in DIY stands at 69.58 per cent.
Budget constraints mean repairs cannot be carried out comprehensively, especially for sections with heavy damage. The capacity of the APBD is only sufficient for routine maintenance, not comprehensive upgrades to road structures.
“This year 2026 is minimalist in terms of budget,” said Ni Made Dwi Panti Indrayanti, the Secretary to the DIY Regional Government, on Thursday (5 March 2026). Ni Made said the focus ahead of the Lebaran mudik was on routine maintenance of provincial road segments to ensure they remain safe for travellers.
Repairs conducted are still limited to patching at damaged points. Despite the limited budget, Ni Made assessed that most of the damaged roads in DIY are not classified as severely damaged. The road condition remains passable, though certain points require patching.
“Still just patching at the damaged points. Not yet rehabilitation or overlay, let alone capacity enhancement of the roads,” she said. “God willing, perhaps our roads can still provide comfort to travellers and visitors to DIY.”
