Ahead of Hajj Peak, Female Pilgrims at Padang Embarkation Receive Special Guidance on Fiqh Regarding Menstruation
Issues regarding the jurisprudence (fiqh) of menstruation remain among the most frequently asked questions by female pilgrims during their worship in the Holy Land. This situation prompted officials from Group 14 of the Padang Embarkation to organise specialised guidance on female Hajj jurisprudence.
The guidance, led by the Group 14 Worship Guide, Tri Andriani Jusair, discussed the procedures for female pilgrims experiencing menstruation, ranging from the obligatory Umrah to the performance of Tawaf Ifadhah during the peak of the Hajj season.
The atmosphere of the guidance session was relaxed yet serious, with several female pilgrims actively listening to the officials’ explanations and noting important points.
Tri Andriani explained that female pilgrims who are menstruating should still perform the sunnah (recommended) acts of ihram, with the exception of the sunnah ihram prayer. Pilgrims must also continue to wear the ihram clothing and recite the intention (niat).
“Upon arriving in Makkah, pilgrims can rest until they are clean, then perform the obligatory bath (mandi wajib) before performing the obligatory Umrah,” Tri Andriani stated during the worship guidance in the corridor of the 9th floor, Tower 9C, Makkah.
She reminded the pilgrims that from the moment they recite the intention of ihram at the miqat, they remain bound by all the prohibitions of ihram, even while menstruating. Therefore, pilgrims are urged to be careful not to violate these regulations.
In addition to discussing the obligatory Umrah, the guidance also highlighted contemporary jurisprudential issues frequently faced by female pilgrims during Tawaf Ifadhah. According to Tri Andriani, pilgrims who have sufficient time remaining in Makkah may postpone Tawaf Ifadhah until they are clean. However, the situation differs for pilgrims whose departure schedule is approaching.
In such situations, officials explained several possible solutions. One option is the use of medication to delay menstruation, based on a doctor’s recommendation, prior to the Armuzna phase (Arafat, Muzdalifah, and Mina).
Tri Andriani also shared the opinion of the scholar Ibn Taymiyyah regarding emergency conditions for pilgrims who have not become clean before their departure. Under certain circumstances, pilgrims are permitted to perform Tawaf Ifadhah provided they ensure that blood does not drip into the mosque area.
“This serves as an emergency solution so that pilgrims can still complete the pillars of their Hajj,” she noted via WhatsApp on Monday (18/5).
The guidance session received significant attention from the female pilgrims of Group 14 Padang, many of whom used the session to consult directly on religious issues encountered during their stay in the Holy Land.
