Ahead of Eid Holiday Travel 2026, KPPU Urges Domestic Airlines to Keep Ticket Prices Fair
Ahead of the 2026 Eid holiday travel season, the Indonesian Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has urged domestic airlines to maintain fair ticket prices and avoid excessive pricing practices that could harm the public.
The statement was made following KPPU investigations that found domestic airfares, such as Jakarta-Surabaya routes, tend to increase significantly ahead of the Eid holiday period as demand for air travel surges.
KPPU Chairman M Fanshurullah Asa stressed that every airline is obliged to comply with applicable tariff regulations and maintain transparency in price-setting mechanisms.
“Healthy competition in the aviation industry is crucial to ensure the public obtains air transport services at fair, transparent, and competitive prices,” Fanshurullah stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Monday, 9 March 2026.
The investigation stems from KPPU Decision Number 15/KPPU-I/2019 concerning Domestic Scheduled Commercial Air Transport Services for Economy Class Passengers, which found that PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT Citilink Indonesia, PT Sriwijaya Air, PT NAM Air, PT Batik Air, PT Lion Mentari, and PT Wings Abadi engaged in ticket price-fixing agreements.
This decision became final through Supreme Court Decision Number 1811/K/Pdt.Sus-KPPU/2022 in September 2023.
The compliance obligations are in effect for two years, from September 2023 through September 2025, during which time KPPU is mandated to oversee implementation of the ruling.
During the monitoring process, KPPU has summoned various parties and received documentation from airlines. The commission stated it will provide recommendations to the Transport Ministry regarding its monitoring findings.
Through this oversight, KPPU hopes aviation sector operators will contribute to providing affordable, fair, and consumer-friendly air transport services. The agency also stressed it will continue monitoring airfare developments throughout the Eid holiday period and will take legal action if any signs of unfair competition or consumer-harming practices are detected.
